3rd Match - Victorville
The third match is now in the books, with 3 more matches to go. This match
was held for the first time at the Apple Valley Gun Club in Victorville.
With Chuck Mahoney as the Range Master and with the help of his clubs member
they set up 6 stages. At first look the stages looked simple, but at the end
of the day everyone agreed the stages tested not only your shooting ability
but your physical conditioning and eyesight. Stage 1 was a multi gun stage
where you started with your shotgun and using both slugs and shot engaged
various targets and finished up with your pistol. Stage 2 was another multi
gun stage starting with your rifle and you had to engage steel plates and
IPSC targets and once again finishing up with your pistol. It should be
noted that both of these stages required you to start with your pistol
holstered, chamber empty and magazine inserted There were no dropped guns
for the whole match so I think everyone has found a way to safely retain
their pistols during the COF's. Stage 3 was an all pistol stage with bobber
and drop turn targets and you had to finish up on a plate rack. Stage 4 was
an all shotgun stage and shooters had the choice of trying to knock down
full size, mini poppers and engage clays from a distance of 30 yards or
moving forward and closing the distance for a sure hit. You really had to
know what your shot pattern was at distance with your preferred choke, #6
shot and spreader loads were the order of the day. Stage 5 was considered
the long range rifle stage for the match. The long range distance was a
little more than 200 yards at 4 rifle targets at 3 positions finishing up
with 2 mid range steel targets. The targets were set in the backdrop of the
desert mountain, hiding among the boulders and rocks. With this set up if
you could see it you could hit it, trying to find the target through your
scope was near impossible you had to know where they were hiding and index
properly to the next target. I think Stage 6 was the best of them all, it
was another multi gun stage set in the natural terrain of a single track
uphill hiking trail. You started with your shotgun and engaged clays birds
hidden along both sides of the trail and before grounding your shotgun you
had to engage a steel IPSC target with a slug at a distance of about 100
yards. With your rifle you had to engage rifle targets from 4 different
positions along the trail either laying over, up against or sitting on large
rocks along the trail. The distance run was less than 40 yards but when you
finished the stage you had to pause to catch your breath.
It was great to see 5 local club members also shoot the match and for most
of them this was their first multi gun match. Great job.
Congratulations to top Tactical Taran Butler and Open Mike Voigt.
The next match will be held on Sunday June 1 at Bakersfield.
